WELCOME TO PLANET VIRTUAL BOY!

Welcome to the third dimension! On this site you will learn everything about Nintendo's failed Virtual Reality experiment, the Virtual Boy. Released back in 1995 only in Japan and North America, the system suffered mainly from missing software support and disappeared a year later from the market, quietly and without any official word. Here we want to build a memorial for this great, unique console, dedicated to its brilliant creator, Gunpei Yokoi. Rest in Peace.

VB Dictionary Search & ROM map tools

New cool releases from DogP!

Firstly, a tool called "Dictionary Word Finder" for doing relative searches through VB ROMs for specific words, e.g. "Debug". Hopefully this will lead to some interesting discoveries. Forum Link.

Second, and most interesting, is some tools to generate maps of ROMs, This is a great opportunity for ROM hackers and those trying to reverse engineer commercial games. There's a new Reality Boy build with support for automated ROM map generation, as well as tools to e.g. merge individual maps into a master map. Forum Link. Did anyone just say VB Wario Land level editor? Mario's Tennis 2 Player mode restauration?

Batch Game Rating Script

In the user menu bar on top of the site, you can now find a link to a batch rating form (unter the "Submit" tab). This now allows our registered users to quickly rate commercial or homebrew games all on one site, instead of having to go to each game site to submit a rating.

I think that user ratings are a pretty good representation of a game's quality. The more people vote, the more accurate, meaningful and important the average scores (and this site) become.

Therefore, all our current and future users are warmly invited to submit scores for the games and demos he or she has played to fortify the reference status of Planet Virtual Boy and its community. (Remember, you also get a badge for this. ) Thank you!

Even more articles

And there's even more article scans for you.

Our reader Johnny from Mexico sent me four articles from mexican Club Nintendo magazine: 1, 2, 3, 4. While the last three only seem to be some kind of ads, the first one is particularly interesting. It's a 2 sided preview of Bound High, Dragon Hopper and Zero Racers with logos and several previously unknown screenshots of Dragon Hopper.

Furthermore, Dave_ sent in no less than nine issues of UK's Power Play magazine: 21 (07/94), 26 (12/94), 27 (01/95), 28 (02/95), 31 (05/95), 33 (07/95), 34 (08/95), 44 (06/96) and 46 (08/96).

Quote:
"According to one Nintendo spokesmen, a colour display for the Virtual Boy had been tested but resulted in jumpy images, and in any case it would have been 'unaffordable' at around 1,500,000¥"
(Super Play (UK) Issue 28 from February 1995)

Thank you, guys!

Virtual Boy Sound Generator

DogP released the "Virtual Boy Sound Generator", a program that pretty accurately emulates the Virtual Boy's sound processor and so let's you test VB sound code on your computer instead of always having to load your flash cart and test on hardware. Discussion and download in this forum thread.
